First-time Homeschooling Registration
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is reaching out to homeschooling families across the province who have not previously registered their children. We are interested in collecting accurate enrollment information that reflects the number of homeschooled students in Nova Scotia.
There are currently thirteen grades (Primary–12) in Nova Scotia. For parents/guardians who have not previously registered their homeschooled students, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development will accept registrations based on the age-appropriate grade, as the department does not have a mechanism to assess the grade level of homeschooled children.
Parents/guardians may develop a program at whatever level meets the needs of the child and can include the relevant information on the registration form. The child’s actual achievement in each subject area can be recorded in the year-end progress report. Should the child register in a public or private school in the future, assessment and grade placement will take place at that time
We are asking all homeschooling parents/guardians who have a child who has reached the age of five by December 31 and is eligible to register their child in Grade Primary to complete the form if they are planning to homeschool. This will allow your child to advance grade levels with their peers. A child must be registered in Grade Primary if the child has reached the age of six.
For students who have not been previously registered in public school in Nova Scotia, we require a copy of the student's birth certificate at the time of registration.
Please take the time to register your homeschooled child. Thank you.
